Boston and The Irish History

The history of Irish people living in Boston dates back to the 19th century when the “Potato Famine” or “Great Hunger” began in Ireland. Because of the crisis, many Europeans left to immigrate to America. Most of them arrived in the USA through the Port of Boston with the largest ethnic group being Irish.

The relationship between Americans and Irish was not the best during those times. The Americans had the upper hand when it came to riches and Irish people were discriminated against. In the years after the Civil War, a lot of employers did not accept Irish employees. Classified ads even read “Irish Need Not Apply.”

That being said, the Irish did not stop fighting for their rights and entered the local political scene. In 1884, the first Irish-Catholic mayor of Boston, Hugh O’Brien, was elected. Then in the 20th century, Joseph P. Kennedy, a descendant of Irish immigrants, became the first head of the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and also became the US ambassador to Great Britain.

It has been a long time since the many Irish came to the USA and a lot has happened since the first time they stepped into this land up to now. As of today, about 23 percent of Boston’s population claims Irish ancestry. The relationship between Irish and Americans has come a long way and up to this day, Boston remains the center of culture and history between Irish and Americans.
